A Suzuki RE5 foi desenvolvida numa altura em que os motores rotativos Wankel estavam no seu auge de desenvolvimento, sendo aplicado nos mais variados veículos. Dessa forma, a Suzuki desenvolveu uma mota com um motor Wankel, após adquirir a licença da NSU, em 1970, mas que no restante era em tudo similar às motos tradicionais, com um design elaborado com a ajuda de Giorgetto Giugiaro.

Os motores Wankel eram mais leves, suaves, compactos e produziam uma elevada potência para a sua cilindrada, parecendo mesmo que teriam um futuro risonho nos motociclos. A Suzuki foi a única marca nipónica a produzir em série uma mota com motor Wankel, a RE5, de 1974 a 1976, com um total de cerca de 6000 unidades produzidas.

O motor da Suzuki RE5 é de um rotor e tem 497cc de cilindrada, desenvolvendo 62cv às 6.500rpm e 75,4Nm de binário às 3500rpm. A injecção de combustível é feita através de um carburador duplo Mikuni e a ignição através de um sistema CDI. Como os motores rotativos produzem muito calor, a RE5 tem um complexo sistema de arrefecimento, tanto a água como a óleo. Acoplado ao motor estava uma caixa manual de cinco velocidades. O peso total da RE5 em ordem de marcha é de 260 quilos.

Na sua época, a Suzuki RE5 não vendeu bem, no entanto, nos últimos anos tem havido uma crescente procura por este modelo por entre os coleccionadores, como o exemplar presente neste artigo, de 1975, e com apenas 20 mil quilómetros percorridos. Foi vendida nova nos EUA e foi importada para o Reino Unido pelo anterior proprietário.
